“Keep close to nature’s heart. And break clear away, once in a while and spend some time in the woods” – John Muir.
Project S.O.S is a new initiative for the year 2020-2021 organised by the Rotaract Club of IIT under the Professional Development Avenue with the aim of teaching and developing basic survival, leadership, and team-building skills of the participants. Project “S.O.S” was a 1-day event held at Che Adventure Park, Hanwella, on the 21st of February from 8:30 am – 7 pm.
Survival, leadership, and team-building skills can be taught over the textbook, but practicing them and following them up must be learnt through experiences. They need to learn them in a real environment to get used to their skills as well as learn from the mistakes they make. This being the primary goal, we hope to improve all participants’ communication skills, problem-solving, decision-making, and teamwork. Therefore, we initiated the project S.O.S to ensure that youth learn to enjoy and thrive in nature while improving their abilities in surviving and adapting to harsh circumstances. The more they know, the more they can apply their skills anywhere and anytime.
Besides, this also offers a moment to witness nature firsthand and break from all the distractions of a rapid lifestyle pace. Camping is a mean of escape from everyday day-to-day life where one gets acquainted with something different and exciting.
Unfortunately, according to the given strict movement restrictions and limitations in participation, we had to limit the registrations for “SOS” for 83 participants due to the prevailing situation in the country.
On the day of the event, many Rotaractors, Interactors and non-committee members were present. Participants were required to be present at the Racecourse at 6.00.a.m. We departed from Racecourse at 6.15.a.m. after marking the registry. Participants were also required to bring a change of clothes (Extra t-shirts and pants). For participants, the dress code was to wear something in a darker colour and a track bottom for the event. Committee members wore something in a light colour. Lunch and welcome drinks were provided at Che adventure park.
Events we covered on that day were:
- Water Rafting
- Target Shooting
- Cable Balancing
The committee divided members randomly and assigned them to a team. The winning team was announced with the highest score for each activity at the end of the day, and a prize was distributed congratulating the team members. We managed to depart from Che adventure park around 7 pm with many unforgettable and exciting memories.
