The world has become internet frenzy. Technology has taken the world by storm, and it is changing drastically touching every aspect of a human’s everyday life, and most businesses or innovations are being technology based in the present day. Thus, we grasped the idea of innovation through technology and gave life to a Christmas-themed hackathon, HaXmas. The initial idea- targeting to bring up a platform for individuals with innovative ideas but having restricted platforms to present them in the meantime, and that’s where HaXmas became a reality.

HaXmas 2019 organized by the Rotaract Club of IIT composed of the ideathon and the Speaking forum. The ideathon commenced on the 25th of January at Virtusa Auditorium, and the forum on the 26th of January at MAS Arena, Royal College with eight distinct speakers.

A large count of teams registered for HaXmas with their ideas submitted prior to the event, and fifteen teams out of them were lucky enough to take part in the event after being filtered by the professionals, to pitch their idea. Kicking off with a welcome speech by the project secretary Rtr. Zuha Mursheed and a countdown displayed on the screen, the participants felt the intensity of the event for a span of eight-straight hours and took the maximum advantage of the mentors at the ideathon- to help them fine-tune their project ideas.

There was an unlimited supply of coffee for everyone throughout to keep the mood up. In addition, lunch and snacks were provided for everyone to keep them up for the entire night. Beat boxing and a singing session was added to the agenda in order to add versatility to the event. The rush of the participants struggling to finalize and submit their projects was well-felt when the final countdown of the final ten minutes began. With a vote of thanks delivered by the Project Chairperson Rtr. Harkim Thameem, the first day of HaXmas drew to a close leaving the participants excited about tomorrow with their idea pitching.

The second day was the big day for the participants- as well for the committee as it was the first time a forum was introduced to this project. The forum started off with the speech of the Co-founder Director of Venture Frontier Mr. Heminda Jayaweera, followed by the inspirational speech of Mr.Dulith Herath the founder / Chairman of Kapruka. They gave us a thorough understanding about innovation and the business industry. Our judging panel for the first idea pitching consisted of Mr. Hemnida Jayaweera and Mr.Dulith Herath, and three teams did the pitching for the first half.

Yasas Hewage gave the audience a thunderous wake up call after the lunch break, and kept the momentum going throughout his energetic speech. A panel discussion took place with Co-founder of Antyra Solutions; Mr. Rohan Jayaweera, Founder and CEO of Calcey Technologies; Mr. Mangala Karunaratne, Founder of Paymedia Mr. Kanishka Weeramuda, CEO of Motion Miracles; Mr. Anish Wijesinghe. This was an interactive session with the audience to ask any question they had from the speakers. This was a very important part of the day because majority of the audience always try to get to know how these successful individuals got to where they are now. After having this discussion it made us realize what it was- just hard work and critical thinking that got them to these prestigious statuses.

After the panel discussion the second idea pitching commenced with the rest of the teams. Every team had a chance to present their ideas to the judges and get their opinions. Afterwards, the winners were chosen from the scores given by the respective judges. Winning team was Team Rajans representing University of Rajarata, 2nd place Team Morpheus from University of Moratuwa and third place was given to Team Greeners representing Informatics Institute of Technology, and each of them received their prizes and finally had the picture of the whole audience that was present to witness this project live in action.

Don’t slow your horses just yet this project just got started and it will be reaching even greater heights in the future.
