On the 16th of December 2017, Trace Expert City was graced by the presence of hundreds of tweeps who gathered once again for TweetUpSL, a meet-up where active twitter users meet offline; this time for the 8th consecutive time. TweetUpSL started as a small scale event where a couple of tweeps decided to meet each other on an agreed day at an agreed place 8 years ago with one intention; to get to know their online friends better. Years later, it has become a phenomenon and the tweeps has to meet certain requirements to attend the event as the number of participants has drastically increased over the years.
This year’s organising committee consisted of Thambaru Wijesekara – President, Akhila Sudharaka – Secretary, Pabasara Palletanne – Treasurer, Sashen Pasindu – Executive member, Graphic designer and Ranuka Dilahara – Executive member, who worked hard to make sure this year’s event was done in a larger scale than the last years.
Tweeps from all over the country were present at the event and most of the tweeps met each other for the first time at the event. It was amazing to see everyone getting along together so well and reminiscing all the fun conversations and arguments they have had online. The tweeps were queued outside Trace Expert City chatting and laughing, waiting for the gates to open by 12.00 p.m. The welcome speech was given by @KawdaBoy and the hosts for the evening were @KawdaBoy and @ShehalG. The LED screen projected the live updates and tweets from the tweeps under the hash tag #TweetUpSL7 which were mainly included the live updates from the events that happened at TweetUpSL.
There were fun and interactive events lined up in the agenda like paper dancing, a karaoke session, a crowd sourced session and much more where tweeps were enjoying and bonding over. Ridma Weerawardena graced the occasion with a melodious performance with his guitarist which the audience enjoyed thoroughly. Kalu Malli with his guitarist, Channuka Devnindu performed a 90s mashup which got most of the tweeps up on their feet swaying and singing along.
The organizers of the TweetUpSL 7 gave us: the Rotaract Club of IIT, the opportunity to put up a collection point at the event to help collect donations for our community service project;‘Srtiving For Miracles’ where we aim to uplift St. John’s Tamil Vidyalayam, Bogawantalawa while providing all 550 students of the mentioned school stationery packs. Tweeps funded for over 10 students proving that the twitter community was not only about having fun and enjoying the evening but is also helping and caring for the less fortunate and those in need.
The last and the most important event of the meet- up which is awarding the most helpful tweep, hashtagaholic, foodie tweep, news breaker of the year, tech geek, funniest tweep, sportaholic, isntagrammaholic, most controversial tweep and twitterholic. Also, not failing to remember the awarding and celebrations of the most awaited Ms. Tweep and Mr. Tweep titles. While all the titles were being awarded, the TweetUpSL cake, which was a tradition that has been in TweetUpSL for years was cut and shared among tweeps.
While the dim vibes took control of the evening, the event concluded with all the tweeps getting together on the dance floor dancing, taking selfies and getting to know each other beyond the 280 characters.
